Frequently Asked Questions
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads since iOS 11. It offers better compression than JPEG at similar quality, but isn't widely supported on Windows, websites, or older software — which is why converting to JPG or PNG is often necessary.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. This converter runs entirely in your web browser using a WebAssembly version of libheif. Your files are never sent to any server. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it will still work.
Is there a file size or count limit?
There's no hard limit, but since conversion uses your computer's memory, very large files (100+ MB) or very large batches may slow down your browser. For best results, convert files in batches of 10–20 at a time.
JPG, PNG, or WebP — which should I pick?
Choose JPEG for photos you want to share or email — it's universally supported and produces small files. Choose PNG if you need lossless quality or transparency. Choose WebP if you're uploading to a website and want the smallest file size at the same quality (typically 25–35% smaller than JPEG). For most iPhone photos, JPEG is the safe default.
Does this work on iPhone or Android?
Yes. Open this page in Safari (iPhone) or Chrome (Android), tap the upload area, pick photos from your camera roll, convert, and save the result back to your device.
