How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Your iPhone (No App Needed)

You're trying to upload a photo to a website, attach it to a job application, or send it to someone on Android — and it comes through as a .heic file nobody can open. The photo is fine; it's just saved in Apple's HEIC format, which older apps and services don't recognize.

The good news: you don't need to download anything. Your iPhone can produce a JPG copy in a handful of taps, and there are four built-in ways to do it. Here's each one, and when to use it.

Method 1: Copy the photo in Files (fastest for one or two photos)

This is the trick most people don't know about — iOS silently converts HEIC to JPG when you copy a photo out of Photos and paste it into the Files app.

1. Open Photos and select the picture (or several).
2. Tap the Share button, then Copy Photo (or Copy Photos).
3. Open the Files app, go to On My iPhone, and open or create a folder.
4. Press and hold in the empty space, then tap Paste.

The files that land there are JPGs, ready to attach or upload from the Files app. It takes about ten seconds and uses nothing but stock iOS.

Note: This works because Photos hands off a compatible copy when sharing outside the photo library. It doesn't change the original in your library — you still keep the space-saving HEIC.

Method 2: Email the photo to yourself

A low-tech option that works on every iPhone and needs zero setup:

1. In Photos, tap Share → Mail.
2. Address the email to yourself and send it.
3. When Mail asks about image size, pick anything other than Actual Size — choosing Large or Medium forces a JPG conversion.

Open the message on your computer and the attachment is a plain JPG. The downside is obvious: it's slow for more than a couple of photos, and resizing means you lose some resolution.

Method 3: Build a Shortcut (best for batches)

If you convert photos regularly, the free Shortcuts app (pre-installed on iOS) can do it in one tap.

1. Open Shortcuts and tap + to create a new shortcut.
2. Add the action Select Photos, and turn on Select Multiple.
3. Add Convert Image, and set the format to JPEG.
4. Add Save to Photo Album (or Save File to send them to Files).
5. Name it something like "HEIC to JPG" and tap Done.

Now you can run it from the Shortcuts app, your home screen, or the share sheet, and convert dozens of photos at once. It's the best native option for a batch — though it does take a few minutes to set up, and the conversion settings are fairly basic.

Method 4: Stop making HEICs in the first place

If you'd rather your iPhone just capture JPGs from now on:

1. Go to Settings → Camera → Formats
2. Choose Most Compatible instead of High Efficiency

Every new photo will be a JPG. Two caveats worth knowing:

• It doesn't touch existing photos — everything already in your library stays HEIC.
• Your photos will take up roughly twice the storage, and you give up HEIC extras like 16-bit color and depth data.

There's also a related setting at Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC. Set it to Automatic and your iPhone converts photos to JPG when you plug into a computer; set it to Keep Originals and you get raw HEIC files.

When to use a converter instead

The built-in methods are great for a photo or two on your phone. They get awkward when you're dealing with a folder of HEIC files that's already on a computer — say, photos you AirDropped to a Windows PC, or a folder someone shared with you.

That's where a browser converter is simpler: drop the files in, pick a format, download.

• HEIC to JPG — the universal choice; opens on any device or website
• HEIC to PNG — lossless, no extra compression at all
• HEIC to WebP — smallest files, ideal for the web

It runs entirely inside your browser, so your photos are never uploaded to a server — which matters a lot when the folder is full of family pictures.
