Why convert HEIC to PNG?
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is lossless. Unlike JPG, which throws away image data to shrink file size, PNG preserves every single pixel exactly as it was. That makes PNG the right choice when image quality matters more than file size — graphic design work, screenshots, photo editing, printing, or any image you plan to edit further without accumulating compression artifacts.
PNG also supports a transparent background (alpha channel), which JPG cannot do. If you're pulling graphics, logos, or edited images out of an iPhone that happen to be in HEIC format, PNG is the only common format that preserves that transparency.
HEIC to PNG, done privately in your browser
Most online HEIC converters upload your files to a server. That's slow, costs bandwidth, and means your personal images briefly sit on someone else's hardware. HEIC Quick does the entire decode-and-encode pipeline locally using a WebAssembly build of libheif. The browser reads your file, decodes the HEIC, and writes out a PNG — all without a single byte crossing the network.
JPG vs PNG vs WebP — which should you pick?
JPG — smallest file, lossy compression, no transparency. Best for sharing and general use. Convert to JPG →
PNG — lossless, supports transparency, larger files. Best for editing, design, screenshots, and archival.
WebP — modern format, smallest of the three at similar quality. Best for web publishing. Convert to WebP →
A note on file size
Expect your PNG outputs to be roughly 3–5x larger than the original HEIC files. HEIC uses modern HEVC-based compression that's about twice as efficient as JPG; PNG uses old-school lossless compression. A 3 MB HEIC can easily become a 12–15 MB PNG. This is normal — you're paying for perfect quality with disk space.
Frequently asked questions
Why convert HEIC to PNG instead of JPG?
Choose PNG when quality matters more than file size — editing workflows, screenshots, graphics with text or sharp edges, or anything you'll process further. Every time you save a JPG it loses a bit of quality; PNG never does.
Does PNG support transparency from HEIC?
Yes. If the source HEIC has an alpha channel, HEIC Quick preserves it in the PNG. Most iPhone photos don't have transparency, but screenshots and edited images may.
Are PNG files larger than HEIC?
Significantly — usually 3 to 5 times larger. That's the cost of lossless encoding vs. modern compression.
